Major Facility Expansion

From the beginning, this massive project has been designed with patients and families in mind.

To facilitate quick and easy access throughout the construction process, Winter Haven Hospital’s 287-car parking structure has been completed. A temporary entrance/exit near the parking structure is now open and in use. Meanwhile, construction continues on the new 60,000 square-foot expansion to the front of the hospital.

When completed, the beautiful new Volunteer Auxilary Grand Lobby will create the kind of healing environment we believe our community should expect from a first-class healthcare organization. One of the first things guests will notice is a welcome and information desk. Adjacent to this area, a soothing water feature will have a pond that appears to flow from the interior to the exterior of the lobby. A healing garden, located on the south end of the lobby, will complete the relaxing and tranquil atmosphere.

New main lobby elevators will provide direct access to the Radiation Oncology Department, making it very convenient for oncology patients to receive care in a timely manner. The elevators will also take patients up to the newly constructed surgical areas on the second floor.

An interior corridor and outside enclosed walkway will allow patients and guests to easily move from the lobby to the Emergency Department.

A spacious Gift Shop, Coffee Shop and Library, as well as a beautiful new Chapel, will be new features of the expanded facility.

Winter Haven Hospital staff believe that our employees, physicians, and families are all partners in the healing process. To this extent, the library will enable patients and families to have easy access to important healthcare information in a relaxed atmosphere.

Integral to the new facility, a Wellness Center will provide cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation as well as nutrition and diabetic education. A conference area will be available for educational sessions and counseling.

Plans call for the hospital’s Pharmacy Department to triple its current size in the new building, allowing for faster, more efficient service for our patients.

Patient Access and Financial Counseling areas will be expanded to be in close proximity to the outpatient lab, medical imaging and cardiology services. A new CT (computerized tomography) scanner, already in place and in operation, will be close to these areas.

Facilitating easy access for patients is the primary focus on the second floor. Six new operating rooms, complete with state-of-the-art equipment, will be part of the new facility. In addition, 28 new pre- and post-surgical beds will be added to the Post Anesthesia Care Unit located in this area.

The second floor will accommodate six new procedure rooms for endoscopy and 20 prep and recovery areas also will be available. Expanded offices and storage space for staff will complement the space.

New reflective glass windows, installed on the west side of the Swann building, are designed to be more energy efficient and tie in with the Emergency Department’s exterior architecture. The new look will give the hospital a modern, state-of-the-art appearance.

When renovations are completed, the fifth floor of the Swann building will become a 32 bed Cardiac Step Down Unit, primarily used for open-heart surgery patients after they leave the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit. Cardiac patients, from post catheterization to post intervention, will also use the unit.

There will be 12 private rooms and 10 semi-private rooms in the 32 bed unit.

In addition, a new paved area on the North side of the hospital has resulted in 207 additional new parking spaces for employees. These new and important additions to Winter Haven Hospital will be great assets to our community and will result in more easily accessible services.

We look forward to welcoming you to these wonderful new facilities at the grand opening in Fall 2008.
